FIELD: organic chemistry, chemical technology. SUBSTANCE: invention relates to method for preparing 2-cyanopyridines of the formula (I) wherein X represents halogen atom; each Y represents electron-accepting group; n = 1-4. Method involves interaction of compound of the formula (II) with activating agent and cyanide source in polar solvent. An activating agent comprises nucleophilic fragment with tertiary nitrogen atom and distinguishing from compounds of formulas (I) and (II). Cyanide source represents hydrogen cyanide, alkaline or alkaline-earth metal cyanide or ammonium cyanide. Describing method represents highly productive method for preparing 2-cyanopyridines, it doesn't require using derivatives of heavy metals, such as copper or nickel cyanide, taken in stoichiometric amounts which can form toxic exhausting flows in industrial scale.
