FIELD: rolled stock production, namely processes and apparatuses for forming coiled rod, possibly of different shapes from high-strength steel. SUBSTANCE: method for making coils of high-strength rolled rod or large-diameter rods of high-strength steel with yield limit more than 300 MPa, with diameter 5.5 - 30 mm or of non-ferrous metal rods with diameter 6 - 36 mm comprises steps of continuous feed of rod by means of guiding rollers through rotating guide; forming rod turns of variable diameters on curvilinear concave surface due to changing revolution number of guide and providing two freedom degrees for rod motion by action of dynamic forces; placing formed rod turns by horizontal layers along height in coil; before feeding rod to guide, rotating rod around its axis in rotation direction of guide in such a way that to turn each cross section of rod relative to other adjacent cross section by angle γ≥arctg(πd/(L+2πR)), where d - diameter of rod; L - distance between axis of guiding rollers and outlet end of guide of turn former; R - radius of formed turns; feeding formed turns of rod after they leave curvilinear concave surface onto stationary guiding member inclined by obtuse angle relative to turn former. Apparatus for forming coiled rod includes guiding rollers, turn former and conveyer for feeding formed turns of rod into pit. Turn former includes mutually joined guide, turn forming head with guiding unit being member with curvilinear concave surface and drive unit provided with device for controlling revolution number of guide. Guiding rollers are arranged relative to path of feeding rod in such a way that angle between their axes and line normal to rod feeding path is equal to γ. Invention provides possibility for making compact rod coils at low feed rate of rolled piece (near 10m/s) and at high feed rate of it (near 100 m/s).
