FIELD: quantum electronics, laser technology. SUBSTANCE: active element of solid laser contains ions of activator and ions of sensitizer. Pumping is carried out through side surface of active element into absorption bands of activator and sensitizer in wave ranges of near infrared radiation or near ultraviolet radiation. Active element has thickness L along pumping direction z with 0≤z≤L, cross-section S(z) and distribution of concentrations of ions of activator and sensitizer nonuniform over volume of active medium. Concentrations of activator na and sensitizer nc averaged by cross-sections S(z) are functions of coordinate z which makes it possible to control profile of energy absorbed in active medium. Simultaneous pumping of active medium into bands of absorption of activator and sensitizer leads to winning of profile equalized by thickness of active element which enables energy stored in active medium to be raised and thermooptical distortions of medium induced by pumping to be decreased that improves spatial-angular characteristics of laser beam formed in medium. Laser ceramics comprising micro granules of crystal containing ions of activator and micro granules containing both ions of activator and sensitizer.
