FIELD: inorganic chemistry, colloids. SUBSTANCE: invention relates to colloidal dispersion of cerium compound that comprises cerium (III). Concentration of cerium oxide in dispersion is at least 50 g/l, content of cerium (III) with respect to the total cerium content is at least 0.5% but not above 50%, specific conductivity is 5 mFm/cm, not above, pH value is from 4 to 8. Dispersion consists of particles with average diameter 15 nm, not above. Method for preparing dispersion involves reaction of at least one cerium (III) salt with a base in the presence of acid taken in the amount wherein the ratio H+/Ce exceeds 1. Precipitated obtained in this reaction is dispersed in water. Dispersion of this type can be used in catalysis, in manufacturing lubricants, ceramics, for preparing luminophores or polymeric films, cosmetics and as anti-corrosive agents.
