FIELD: petroleum processing and petrochemistry. SUBSTANCE: method is implemented using aqueous alkali solutions containing polar organic additives selected from the alcohol series and oxidizing sulfur compounds with oxygen-containing gas (air) at 10 to 80(r) and pressure up to 3.0 MPa in presence of cobalt phthalocyanine as oxidation catalysts. Polar organic additives are added to water-alkali solution in amounts 4.5 to 80%. Water-alkali phthalocyanine is supplemented by mono- and dialkylamines, amides, polyamines, and their combinations in amounts up to 3%. Alcohol additives are selected from water-soluble C1-C3-alcohols, glycols (ethylene glycol, diethylene glycol, triethylene glycol, propylene glycols), glycerols, ethanolamine, glucose, and sugars. Aqueous alkali solution contains 3 to 20% hydroxides and up to 10% sodium, potassium, and ammonium thiosulfates and sulfates.
