SUBSTANCE: invention relates to a method for preparing formic acid ester or methanol and to a catalyst for this method. Preparing formic acid ester is carried out by interaction of carbon monoxide with alcohol in the presence of water and/or carbon dioxide in the presence of a catalyst. Method for preparing methanol involves interaction of carbon monoxide with alcohol in the presence of a catalyst for preparing formic acid ester in the presence of water and/or carbon dioxide. In the reaction mixture a catalyst for hydrogenolysis of formic acid ester and hydrogen for hydrogenation of formed formic acid ester present simultaneously to yield methanol. Catalyst represents alkaline metal salt that differs from alkaline metal alkoxide. Invention proposes a method for preparing methanol that involves interaction of alcohol with the reaction system comprising carbon monoxide and hydrogen in the presence of a catalyst representing alkaline metal salt that differs from alkaline metal alkoxide and a catalyst comprising copper in common with manganese and/or rhenium. Invention proposes a catalyst for preparing methanol that is prepared by applying a catalyst representing alkaline metal salt that differs from alkaline metal alkoxide on a solid catalyst used for hydrogenolysis of formic acid ester. Also, invention proposes a catalyst for preparing methanol that consists of a catalyst representing alkaline metal salt that differs from alkaline metal alkoxide and a catalyst comprising copper in common with manganese and/or rhenium. Invention provides synthesis of the end product under low pressure and low temperature, a catalyst eliciting with high stability against inactivation.
