FIELD: electrical and electromechanical engineering; electrical machines such as turbogenerators used as synchronous condensers.

SUBSTANCE: novelty is that at least part of springs of shaft end seals designed to hold shell down to rotor thrust disk are compressed at greater force than remaining ones and secured in compressed state so that guaranteed clearance is formed between spring ends and end surfaces of seal case and shell, and that the total pressure exerted by springs secured in compressed state within permissible axial displacement range of rotor shaft exceeds external axial forces applied to electrical machine rotor. According to second alternative, for the same purpose part of springs of shaft end seal disposed on one end of electrical machine can be pre-compressed to such extent that total pressure of springs installed at this end exceeds pressure of springs mounted in shaft seals on its opposite end by magnitude of external axial forces. According to third alternative, thrusts are inserted between shell and seal case to restrict axial displacement of rotor shaft within permissible range. Such mechanical design of shaft seals provides for their functioning as journal bearings so that disconnecting generator from turbogenerator set enables its use as synchronous condenser.

EFFECT: enhanced reliability and enlarged functional capabilities of electrical machine.
