FIELD: polymerization processes.

SUBSTANCE: invention relates to manufacture of plastics, namely to periodic and continuous polystyrene production processes, including high-impact polystyrene production, via radical chain polymerization in bulk or in suspension. Invention discloses free-radical polymerization of styrene in presence of initiator and at elevated temperature under an inert atmosphere characterized by that "dormant" inhibitors selected from urethanes and aromatic azoxy and nitroso compounds are supplementary added to staring reaction system in amount not exceeding 3·10-2 M. Urethanes, which are products of reaction of initiators R1NCO with phenols having general formula or with 6-chromanol derivatives having general formula , as well as diurethanes and thiourethanes are described as "dormant" styrene polymerization inhibitors.

EFFECT: prevented emergency situation under non-controlled temperature rise conditions in polymerization process.
