FIELD: investigating or analyzing materials by the use of electric, electro-chemical, or magnetic means, particularly to sense wear of steel wire ropes of climbing cranes, lifts and other hoisting machines.

SUBSTANCE: method involves magnetizing suspended sections of rope to be investigated in longitudinal direction to reach nearly saturated state; measuring current magnetic field parameters in interpolar space at rope surface with the use of magnetic field control sensors; comparing current signal values with reference value of the magnetic field control sensors; additionally measuring linear rope elongation L after rope suspension and comparing current rope elongation L value with calculated elastic elongation value Lc. Rope wear value can be inferred by the following correlation: 0.98≤L/Lc≤1.02.
