SUBSTANCE: invention relates to gel fraction from flea plantain seeds husk and designated for reducing serum blood cholesterol content and for using as a food supplement. This food supplement shows tolerance to microbial fermentation in passing through the monogastric digestive tract of mammals. Fraction comprises xylose and arabinose in the definite mass ratio in dry state and a definite amount of rhamnose wherein the gel fraction is soluble in diluted alkaline solution and able to form gel at acidification of solution to pH about 4.5. Invention relates to a pharmaceutical composition used for reducing the blood cholesterol that comprises the effective dose of gel fraction. Invention relates to carbohydrate fraction from flea plantain seeds husk designated for reducing the serum blood cholesterol content and for using as a food supplement that is soluble in diluted alkaline solution and remains in soluble state at acidification of solution to pH about 4.5. Indicated fraction comprises xylose and arabinose in the definite ratio and a definite amount of rhamnose and uronic acids. Invention relates to a method for reducing the serum blood cholesterol content that involves administration of a pharmaceutical composition to a patient. Above described gel fraction, pharmaceutical composition and carbohydrate fraction reduce the serum blood cholesterol content effectively. Invention can be used for reducing the serum blood cholesterol content.
