FRICTION WELDING METHOD BY MEANS OF ROTATING DISC TOOL Russian patent published in 2008 - IPC B23K20/12

FIELD: missile and aircraft manufacture, ship building, boiler production, other branches of machine engineering and building, namely joining of large-length sheet members and constructional units of different construction materials.

SUBSTANCE: method comprises steps of assembling welded members and fixing them on supporting plate; moving disc tool immersed to butt at welding rate along butt line; simultaneously squeezing joined edges by rolling near-seam zones by means of freely rotating rolls mounted at both sides from disc tool. Rolls and disc tool may be mounted on the same mandrel or in different mandrels. Rolls mounted in separate mandrels may be arranged behind rotation axis of disc tool. Spacing between rolls is set less than thickness of disc tool. Simultaneously with rolling near-seam zones welded seam is rolled by means of roller having predetermined relief of its contact surface and arranged behind disc tool.

EFFECT: enlarged assortment of welded materials, improved quality of joints, possibly of materials with high thermal deformation properties, members with different heat radiation masses.
