FIELD: dissolving irradiated nuclear fuel incorporating magnesium metal; radiochemical industry.
SUBSTANCE: proposed method for dissolving fuel elements incorporating magnesium metal involves dissolution of non-hated fuel-element magnesium component in nitric acid of 8-12 mole/l concentration. Solution obtained in the process is heated and fuel composition is dissolved therein. This method provides for minimal amount of released hydrogen, formation of minimal possible amount of solutions suited to further recovery with aid of Pyrex scheme due to use of only one reagent in minimal and quite sufficient volume.
EFFECT: enhanced explosion and fire safety of process, reduced time taken to dissolve fuel elements.
