FIELD: SNF regeneration.
SUBSTANCE: method for converting uranium-zirconium fuel into a nitric acid solution. The method for opening the uranium-zirconium fuel composition includes thermal oxidation of the uranium-zirconium fuel composition, which is carried out at a temperature of 650 to 750°C. The resulting mixture is mixed with sodium hydroxide and again maintained at the above temperature. The resulting sintered material is dissolved by heating in nitric acid.
EFFECT: complete opening of uranium-zirconium fuel compositions with any mass ratio of uranium and zirconium without the use of ultra-high temperatures and nitrogen-fluoride solutions.
