FIELD: performing operations, electricity.

SUBSTANCE: connected regions of the points wherein the colour is typical for the red eye effect and nontypical for the human skin, or wherein the result of filtration using at least one of the four directional edge detection filters exceeds a threshold value, are defined in one pass through the image points; the coordinates of the bounding rectangle for each connected region and its feature set are calculated, obviously false red eye regions are excluded from consideration; additional features within and around the region bounding rectangle are calculated; each connected region of points is qualified on the basis of its features as a red eye region or false red eye region; points of the connected region within the bounding rectangle are marked up for a red eye region; the image points, being adjacent to the points of a connected red eye region and having similar colours, are added to the connected red eye region; the colour of the connected red eye region is changed by transforming it to a gray colour, by shadowing or mixing it with the points of the original image.

EFFECT: increase in the image treatment speed, as well as the capability to deal with various colour spaces.
