SUBSTANCE: said utility invention relates to the metallurgical production, particularly, to methods of measurement of the melt level in ladles in inert gas (e.g. nitrogen or argon) steel blowing plants when immersed tuyeres are used for blowing. According to this invention, the average ladle bottom level (the position above the ground level) is evaluated previously. The new tuyere length, which is constant from one melt blowing cycle to another, is measured and recorded. The tuyere is lowered into the melt at a given speed while simultaneously supplying the inert gas at the same flow as during the melt blowing. The tuyere positioning mechanism capsule position (level) vs. time is measured continuously. Simultaneously, tuyere input pressure change dynamics vs. time is analysed. The smoothed pressure vs. time curve is used to retrospectively determine the moment of time corresponding to the flex point found at the smoothed pressure vs. time curve. The tuyere positioning mechanism capsule position corresponding to the flex point is measured. The tuyere shortening value is measured on the fly. The said value is used to measure the tuyere shortening value at the end of the previous blowing cycle. The melt level in the ladle for a new tuyere is calculated using the first mathematical expression, and the melt level in the ladle for a reused tuyere is calculated using the second mathematical expression.
