FIELD: physics.

SUBSTANCE: said utility invention relates to the transmission of optical data with high spectral efficiency in multi-channel optical fibre communication lines joined with the modular data transmission format. The method involves the generation of a periodic pulse pattern determined by the bit slot pattern where the pulse is contained in each bit slot; pulse filtering for obtaining optical carrier pulses with a duration of more than one bit slot, and modulation of this pattern according to the information data. The optical filter application results in the generation of pulses with an intensity minimum at the centres of the bit slots adjacent to this bit slot. The device for the implementation of the method contains the following components optically connected in series: an optical pulse generator, a modulator, and an optical filter, the optical filter frequency being shifted relative to the carrier frequency of this frequency channel.

EFFECT: provides increased spectral efficiency as compared to traditional data transmission formats without polarisation multiplexing of channels.
