FIELD: physics.
SUBSTANCE: heat shield of reactor shell includes active zone basket, steel shell rings mounted and fixed in the said basket, shell ring divider fixed on the shell bottom. The heat shield includes also boron carbide slugs placed beyond the shell ring divider and forming a multilayer annular shield at any height of the active zone. Gaps between the boron carbide slugs of one layer are overlapped with boron carbide slugs of the next layer.
EFFECT: elimination of hard capture radiation in the heat shield elements and reduction of radiation effect on reactor shell.
