FIELD: chemistry.
SUBSTANCE: invention concerns method of obtaining mononitrotoluene with increased output of p-isomer used as intermediate product in polyurethanes and other polymer materials, colorants, medical compounds, perfume compositions and explosives, by toluene nitration with concentrated nitric acid in the presence of solid-phase acid zeolite catalyst. Nitration is performed in chloroform medium, and highly porous ceramic foam carrier is used as catalyst with coated with one or more layers of solid-phase acid zeolite with pore size of 4.0-5.4 A, in amount of 27-60% of total catalyst weight. Process selectivity in respect of p-isomer is up to 85%.
EFFECT: elimination of stage of target product flushing off catalyst surface, increased p-isomer output due to the effect of solvent nature, reduced catalyst loss, simplified stage of catalyst recovery.
