FIELD: chemistry.
SUBSTANCE: invention refers to a method for producing 5- and 6-nitro-1-(4-nitrophenyl)-1,3,3-trimethylindanes by carrying out a reaction of 1,1,3-trimethyl-3-phenylindane and nitric acid. According to the present method, 1,1,3-trimethyl-3-phenylindane is nitrated in the presence of a catalyst - modified amorphous mesoporous aluminium silicate (fluorinated or sulphated). The reaction is carried out at 80-130°C and molar ratio of phenylindane:HNO3 = 1:6÷14 for 8 h in the presence of 2-4 wt % (at the reaction mixture) of the catalyst.
EFFECT: method enables discarding sulphuric acid in the nitration process, as well as simplifying the process and reducing its price.
