SUBSTANCE: invented here is a handover system in a broadband wireless access (BWA) communication system. In this system, the service base station sends out information on neighbouring base stations, including base station identifiers for the set of neighbouring base stations and reference signal indices, indicating reference signals used by neighbouring base stations. A mobile station receives the information on neighbouring base stations and requests for a scanning interval from the service base station in the moment of time, when the mobile station intends to scan. The base station provides the mobile station with a scanning interval in response to the request. The mobile station then scans reference signals, coming from neighbouring base stations in the scanning time interval in accordance with information on neighbouring base stations.
