FIELD: lighting.
SUBSTANCE: invented here is a ballast for electroluminescent lamps and its use in making illuminating devices with electroluminescent lamps, using a new mode of gas excitation, in which the luminescence is created with the help of controlled pulses. These pulses consist of non-cyclic voltage levels, divided with off periods with alternating lengths.
EFFECT: increasing power efficiency with increase of the service life of luminescent lamps.
