FIELD: medicine, neurology.
SUBSTANCE: strength of iliopsoas muscle (IPM) is measured using balance, on which platform is situated with stool of known weight m1. Patient of known weight m2 seats on the stool with flat load of known weight m3 on his head. His left leg rests on the platform, and his right leg bears against examiner's hand by the knee; isometric tension of IPM is exercised to flex the hip; 90° angle between the hip and the body being constant. Patient's lower leg and hip muscles are relaxed. In such patient position and such force, right leg IPM maximum strength mmax of three attempts is registered on the scale. In a similar manner, left leg IPM maximum strength mmax is registered on the balance, and IPM strength per 1 kg patient's weight is calculated by expression: . If the values are: right <0.169 and left <0.186, then IPM strength is stated below normal; if the values are 0.374 and 0.382 respectively, IPM strength is stated above normal.
