FIELD: physics; measurement.

SUBSTANCE: invention relates to instrument making, particularly to the technique of measuring height of cloud layers. When measuring height of cloud layers, probing pulses are directed to the cloud layers. A photodetector is switched on by a first supply strobe pulse at the same time as the first probing pulse. An echo signal is received. The time delay between the probing pulse and operation of the photodetector is determined. A single pulse is sent to a memory unit at the moment of operation of the photodetector. Each subsequent supply strobe pulse of the photodetector is shifted. Measurement is repeated. Single pulses are summed up in corresponding memory units and the data are transferred to a computer for histograming.

EFFECT: more efficient use of energy of the probing pulse with increased probability of reception of echo signal by the photodetector and easier signal processing.
