SUBSTANCE: invention relates to processing multi-channel sound, and particularly to generation and use of parametric supplementary information for describing spatial properties of a multi-channel audio signal. Parametric presentation of a multi-channel audio signal describes spatial properties of an audio signal well using compact supplementary information, when coherence information, which describes coherence between the first and second channels, is received during the process of hierarchical coding only for a pair channels, including the first channel, which only has information on the left side of the listening position, and including the second channel, which only has information on the right side of the listening position. Since in the hierarchical process many signal channels for the audio signal are iteratively mixed in monophonic channels, corresponding parametres can be chosen at the coding stage, which only relate to channel pairs, carrying information required for describing spatial properties of the multi-channel audio signal.

EFFECT: reduced number of parametres transferred from the coder to the decoder, using a hierarchical structure of a spatial sound system.
