SUBSTANCE: invention relates to a method of encoding/decoding an image. A method is disclosed for encoding an image, involving a stage on which the input image signal, corresponding to a single image, is divided into several signals of a pixel block, a stage for generating a signal of the predicted image, on which there is internal prediction so as to extrapolate the prediction pixel in a direction, given for each of several prediction modes, using reference pixels, the number of which varies according to distance between the prediction pixel and the encoded reference pixel, for generation of the signal of predicted image and information on prediction mode, a stage on which the prediction error signal is subtracted from the signal of the pixel block and signal of the predicted image, a stage on which one prediction mode is selected from several prediction modes using the prediction error signal, and a stage on which the image signal is encoded using the prediction error signal, based on the selected prediction mode.

EFFECT: more efficient image encoding/decoding.
