FIELD: physics.
SUBSTANCE: device can be used in acceleration technology for accelerating several types of charged particles. To widen functional capabilities of the isochronous cyclotron during acceleration of different types of charged ions, rotating magnetic shims are used, which lie in bottoms, free from dees in a vacuum chamber in furrows, made in pole terminals of the electromagnet, which are covers of the vacuum chamber. The shape of the surface of the rotating magnetic shims is determined through mathematical modeling. The axis of rotation of each rotating shim is coplanar with the median plane of the electromagnet of the cyclotron and is directed radially to the centre of the pole. The shims are rotated using a rack actuator with a sealed movable rod without vacuum failure in the acceleration chamber. In acceleration mode of the heaviest particles, the shim is in the furrow. Magnetic field is distributed on the surface of pole terminals, which provide for isochronous relationship for corresponding accelerated particles. In acceleration mode of the lightest particles, shims turn at a given angle about the axis, come out of the furrow and are near the median plane, through which distribution of magnetic field changes and magnetic induction increases by the required value.
