SUBSTANCE: invention relates to computer software safety, particularly to detection of pirate or unlicensed software. The invention involves reception of a software update request by a client computer and provision for a test which should be completed by the client computer in relation to application of client software. The client computer can be refused to update the software if the test detects an illegal copy of client software. The invention can be realised in practice in an environment with a network structure, where a server sends a test program to the client for execution upon request for software update. The test carries out an integrity test and prevents software update if it has been detected that the client software is illegal.
EFFECT: use of invention protects software from piracy.
