SUBSTANCE: invention relates to file systems, specifically to file systems for displaying different types of elements and from different physical locations. For this purpose the file system uses virtual folders, which show users ordinary files and folders in different presentations based on their metadata and not on the physical structure of the file system on the disc on which they are based. Non-file elements can be presented in the virtual folders. In other words files stored in memory lie in physical memory. Virtual folders can contain elements which are currently not presented in physical memory. Examples of non-file elements are e-mail messages and contact information.

EFFECT: possibility of obtaining a wide range of elements ie possibility of presenting elements from several physical locations (for example, different hard drives, different computers, different network locations etc) such that, all elements are presented to the user as if they are from the same location.
