SUBSTANCE: invention relates to means of providing a user with items having metadata properties associated with said items. The method includes automatically selecting a first metadata property based on default information corresponding to a computer user, wherein the first metadata property describes at least a portion of two or more items, wherein each of the one or two items comprises a file. Within a relational database, a computer process is used to search for items that have the selected first metadata property and that correspond to a search scope defined by a user. The method includes drawing items that have the selected first metadata property, wherein each of the file items is drawn from the corresponding physical memory location at which the file item is stored and non-file items are drawn from the relational database in which the non-file items are stored. A first virtual folder display object that represents a collection of items is provided within a file system user interface.
