FIELD: chemistry.
SUBSTANCE: invention relates to chemistry and can be used in synthesis of corundum based on molten aluminium oxide. The corundum has spherical grains with diametre ranging from 0.001 to 5 mm, maximum sodium oxide content of 0.5 wt %, maximum titanium oxide content of 0.5 wt %, bulk weight ranging from 1.5 kg/l to 2.5 kg/l and BET specific surface area ranging from 0.005 m2/g to 0.05 m2/g. The corundum has breaking strength of grains ≥20 N, preferably ≥40. The corundum is obtained by melting alumina with addition of 0.1 to 1% quartz sand in an electric arc furnace in oxidation conditions. The melt is poured at a rate of not less than 100 kg/min and the molten stream is broken with compressed air at pressure ranging from 3 to 10 bars.
EFFECT: obtaining corundum with compact grains.
