FIELD: physics.

SUBSTANCE: ultrasound pulses are generated using the piezoelectric transducer of an ultrasound flaw detector. The pulses are received and converted into an echo signal. A position for the transducer at which amplitude of the first echo signal assumes a maximum value is found. Sensitivity of the flaw detector is corrected, while displaying amplitude of the first echo signal on the screen of the flaw detector at a given level. Pulses are emitted at the side of the metal. The sweep range on the section of the pipe without coating is corrected such that, on the right side of the screen there is a control echo signal whose amplitude is not less than half the amplitude of the first echo signal. The pipe is monitored and the site where there is bond failure between the coating and metal is determined from presence of the control echo signal.

EFFECT: possibility of detecting bond failure between polymer coating and a metal pipe when there is no access on the side of the coating, more efficient monitoring, wider range of monitored coating thickness.
