FIELD: physics; acoustics.
SUBSTANCE: invention relates to encoding multichannel sound. Parametric presentation (12) of a multichannel sound signal having parametres suitable for use together with a monophonic signal obtained through reducing mixing, for computation of a reconstructed multichannel sound signal, can be effectively obtained in a way backward compatible with the stereophonic signal using a unit (18) for combining parametres for generating parametric presentation (12) by combining one or more spatial parametres (20) and a stereophonic parametre (22) which gives parametric presentation (12) containing a stereophonic parametre (24) suitable for use by a decoder and information on one or more spatial parametres (26), which is presents together with the stereophonic parametre (24) suitable for use by a decoder one or more spatial parametres (20).
EFFECT: generation and use of parametric presentation of a multichannel sound signal, which is backward compatible with devices for playing back parametric stereo signals.
