SUBSTANCE: apparatus includes a parametric stereophonic coding (PS) parameter estimation step. The parameter estimation step is configured to determine one or more parametric stereophonic coding parameters based on a stereophonic audio signal in a frequency-variant or frequency-invariant manner. Preferably, said PS parameters are time- and frequency-variant. Furthermore, the apparatus includes an upmix step. The upmix step is configured to generate an improved stereophonic signal based on a first audio signal and the one or more parametric stereophonic coding parameters. The first audio signal is obtained from the stereophonic audio signal, e.g. by a downmix operation at a downmix step. The PS parameter estimation step may be part of a PS encoder. The upmix step may be part of a PS decoder.

EFFECT: improving the audio signal of an FM stereophonic radio receiver.
