FIELD: physics; image processing.

SUBSTANCE: invention relates to identification of a person from a facial image. This result is achieved due to that, a video image with the face of the identified person is obtained in a frontal angle; fragments with the image of eyes are separated through preliminary separation of primary distinctive points corresponding to location of eyes, and comparison with preset standards of the right eye and the left eye; sections with important information in the separated fragment of the information field are separated by applying a Gaussian function in an ellipse; face standards for identified people are constructed using at least two types of orthogonal basis functions for preliminary search and recognition, for detailed recognition and constructing additional standards for final recognition; a person is identified from integral estimation of the degree of similarity for each analysed fragment through a two-step procedure of comparing standards for preliminary searching and recognition and comparing standards for detailed and final recognition.

EFFECT: faster procedure and increased reliability of identifying a person.
