FIELD: nuclear physics.
SUBSTANCE: invention relates to nuclear engineering and more specifically to a method for thermal processing high activity solid radioactive wastes for their fixation in a stable solid medium to obtain a product meant for safe intermediate storage or final disposal. The method for thermal processing high activity solid wastes is realised in self-propagating high-temperature synthesis mode. The mixture of wastes, energy carrier and oxidising agent is burnt directly in the working hole of a spent graphite block of the nuclear-reactor core pile. The outer surface of the spent block has medium- and low-level radioactivity.
EFFECT: use of the invention increases amount of high activity wastes fixed in stable solid medium in one process cycle and cuts total volume of radioactive wastes to undergo safe intermediate storage or final disposal.
