FIELD: chemistry.
SUBSTANCE: method involves the following stages: a) obtaining crude gas containing hydrocyanic acid through hydration of formamide until formamide conversion ≥ 97%, b) washing the crude gas obtained at stage a) with acid if necessary; c) subsequent reaction of crude gas obtained at stage a) or if necessary at stage b) with an aqueous metal hydroxide M(OH)x solution, where M is selected from a group consisting of alkali metals and alkali-earth metals and x depends on oxidation state of M and equals 1 or 2.
EFFECT: method enables obtaining aqueous solutions of cyanides of alkali and alkali-earth metals with less colour index, while avoiding expensive purification stages.
