SUBSTANCE: invention relates to ecology and soil science. The method involves taking a clean soil sample No.1, a biological agent sample No.2, a sample No.3 of soil contaminated with hydrocarbons or a sample No.4 of soil contaminated with hydrocarbon sludge, a sample No.3a of soil contaminated with hydrocarbons with addition of a biological agent, or a sample No.4a of soil contaminated with hydrocarbon sludge with addition of a biological agent. Catalase activity in the taken samples is determined for not more than one day using non-toxic reagents, specifically calcium carbonate or aqueous hydrogen peroxide solution. The beginning of soil cleanup is indicated by catalase activity in sample No.3a or No.4a higher than that in sample No.3 or No.4 respectively, and the end of cleanup and neutralisation is indicated by the same catalase activity in sample No.3a or No.4a as that in sample No.1 or No.2 respectively.

EFFECT: method reduces labour input for monitoring cleanup of soil contaminated with hydrocarbons, and neutralisation of hydrocarbon sludge using a biological agent.
