SUBSTANCE: invention relates to methods for coding data, for example to a method of coding audio data and/or video data using variable turning angles for data components. A method is disclosed for coding input signals (I, r) for generating coded signals (100), which involves processing the input signals (I, r) to determine first parametres (φ1, φ2) describing relative phase difference and time difference between signals (I, r) and using these first parametres (φ1 φ2) to process input signals to generate intermediate signals. The method involves processing intermediate signals to determine second parametres (α IID, ρ) describing the turning angle of first intermediate signals to generate the main signal (m) and a residual signal (s), where the main signal (m) has amplitude or energy greater than the residual signal (s), and second parametres can be used to process intermediate signals to generate the main (m) and the residual (s) signals. The method also involves quantisation of first parametres, second parametres and the main and residual signals (m, s) to generate corresponding quantised data for subsequent multiplexing in order to generate coded data (100).
