The technical result is achieved by analysing the stereo input signal by applying both the coding of the middle/side stereo signal and the coding of the left/right stereo signal, and selecting either the coding mode of the middle/side stereo signal or the coding mode of the left/right stereo signal based on the estimated entropy for each stereo encoding mode, encoding the stereo input signal using the selected stereo encoding mode in the first frequency band to obtain an encoded stereo signal in the first frequency band, downmixing the stereo input signal to mono in the second frequency band, encoding the mono signal in a second frequency band using transform coding to obtain an encoded mono signal in the second frequency band and output the encoded stereo signal in the first frequency band and the encoded mono signal in the second frequency band as an encoded output signal.

EFFECT: providing the possibility of combining PS-coding using the residual signal and adaptive perceptual stereo L/R-or M/S-coding.
