FIELD: physics.

SUBSTANCE: method involves recording the number of pulses at standard frequency and scanning space using an antenna system consisting of paired four antennae. Each pair forms an equisignal direction, with distance between equisignal directions of antenna pairs equal to L. Scanning speed equals ω and the scanning point is located in the middle of antenna pairs. The time at which an object is found on the equisignal direction of each antenna pair is recorded. The time interval T between time moments when the object is found on the equidistant direction of each antenna pair is determined. Distance to the object is determined. The range finder has series-connected reception channel, switch, pulse counter, computer and memory with a display, as well as a generator of pulses at standard frequency, an angular speed ω setting device and a device for setting the distance L between equisignal directions of antenna pairs. The output of the generator of pulses at standard frequency is connected to the input of the switch, and outputs of the angular speed ω setting device and distance L between equisignal directions of antenna pairs are connected to inputs of the computer.

EFFECT: enhancement of the method and device owing to possibility of measuring range without using a radiation signal.
