SUBSTANCE: apparatus for use in a process device which provides the required safety integrity level (SIL) for the said process device has a device interface which is configured for connection to another part of the said process device and provide an output signal related to operation of a component of the process device, a component monitor configured to monitor operation of the component based on the output signal from device interface and identify a safety event of the component, and a safety response module configured to respond to the safety event of the component in accordance with a safety response.
