FIELD: chemistry.
SUBSTANCE: invention relates to chemistry and can be used in cleaning gas streams from hydrogen sulphide in oil, gas and gas chemical industry. Gas streams are cleaned from hydrogen sulphide through oxidation of the hydrogen sulphide to elementary sulphur in liquid phase in the presence of a transition metal compound and an organic complexing agent. The oxidising agent is oxygen or air and the transition metal compound used is a copper halide with copper content in the solution between 0.015 and 0.1 wt %. The complexing agent used is a compound selected from dimethylformamide, pyrrolidone, methylpyrrolidone, pyridine or quinoline. The process is carried out in a solvent medium selected from: monobasic alcohol, polybasic alcohol, water or their mixture, kerosene, isooctane and gaseous condensate at 20-40°C.
EFFECT: invention reduces catalyst consumption.
