FIELD: chemistry.

SUBSTANCE: method involves the following steps: a1) polymerisation at the first step of one or more ethylene unsaturated monomers in the presence of at least one nitroxyl ether which contains a structural element, in which X denotes a group containing at last one carbon atom or is such that a free radical X• which is derived from X can initiate polymerisation; or a2) polymerisation at the first step of one or more ethylene unsaturated monomers in the presence of at least one stable free nitroxyl radical and a free-radical polymerisation initiator; where at least one monomer used at step a1) or a2) is C1-C6alkyl or hydroxyC1-C6alkyl ether of acrylic or methacrylic acid; b) modification of the polymer or copolymer obtained at step a1) or a2) through re-esterification. At step b) alcohol is an unsubstituted straight or branched aliphatic monobasic C8-C36 alcohol or a monobasic alcohol derived from ethylene oxide, propylene oxide or mixtures thereof, containing up to 100 C atoms. The invention discloses polymers and copolymers obtained using said method, their use, a pigment concentrate and a coating composition.

EFFECT: obtaining a polymer or copolymer having improved functional quality.
