FIELD: chemistry.
SUBSTANCE: time in which an acoustic pulse passes through a controlled volume of a multi-phase stream is determined, the speed of ultrasound in the emulsion is calculated, the speed of ultrasound in both liquids making up the emulsion is calculated, divergence from linear variation of the speed of sound with water-bearing nature is determined by determining density of both liquids, adiabatic compressibility of both liquids is calculated and water-bearing nature is determined. Using appropriate mathematical expressions, or during calibration, the variation of speed of sound with water-bearing nature in the emulsion is determined. The difference of this relationship from the linear law is approximated. Speed of sound in both liquids is determined. Water-bearing nature of the emulsion is determined using the difference between the relationship and the linear law obtained during calibration and the measured speed of sound in the emulsion.
EFFECT: high accuracy of determining water-bearing nature of an emulsion.
