FIELD: physics.

SUBSTANCE: in a display device, backlight for liquid crystal panels is segmented into a plurality of regions. A frequency distribution processing module calculates the number of dark pixels from the frequency distribution values of pixel hue in the video image. A backlight control module calculates the lower bound of brightness in each region included in the backlight so that the lower bound increases when the number of dark pixels becomes less. The backlight control module regulates brightness in each region separately in accordance with hue values in each part of the video image, and brings brightness to the lower bound, where brightness is less than the lower bound.

EFFECT: reduced difference in brightness between regions illuminating dark parts of the video image and reduced blurring of brightness caused by brightness boundaries between regions.
