FIELD: physics.
SUBSTANCE: measured length is broken into several basic sections. The position of the ends of the article is determined using position sensors mounted on borders of the basic sections. The sensor lying first in the direction of movement of the article is mounted at a fixed distance in front of the driven roller. Measurements inside the basic sections are taken using a pulse sensor. The pulse sensor is mounted on the driven roller of the roller conveyor. The length which is not measured by the pulse sensor is corrected on each basic section. Correction is carried out by calculating the ratio of pulses which are not counted by the pulse sensor, and the length of the passed basic sections, the current length on each next basic section is determined as a ratio of the counted number of pulses and the correction coefficient obtained on the previous basic section. Measurement is stopped when the given end of the article passes the first position sensor. The total length of the article is determined as the sum of the measured current length and the fixed distance between the driven roller and the first position sensor.
EFFECT: exclusion of errors caused by sliding of a workpiece due to wearing of the rollers of the drive, and simple measurement process owing to avoiding the need to take into account parametres of the measured object and calculating parametres of the drive.
