FIELD: chemistry.

SUBSTANCE: invention relates to production of heat insulators from natural mineral raw material and can be used in improving quality of the heat insulator made from low-quality natural raw material. The method of burning expanded vermiculite in a reducing medium in a reaction volume with a gas-impermeable dome involves heating the reaction zone in a hydrogen atmosphere, isothermic holding and outlet of the formed gaseous products from under the reaction volume. When heating the reaction zone and when temperature reaches 700°C, water vapour is blown through the reducing agent until the end of the process.

EFFECT: high quality of vermiculite owing to its low iron content.
