FIELD: metallurgy.
SUBSTANCE: procedure consists in control over voltage on electrodes during furnace operation and over degree of electric arc development in under-electrode space of each electrode by means of electric filter; degree of development is determined by value of dc component in phase voltage of each electrode. To reduce development of arc in closed furnaces when specified value of dc component of phase voltage is exceeded, charge is loaded in a region of the electrode where formation of cavity is taking shape. Otherwise, the electrode is transferred or it is transferred and steps of a furnace transformer are switched to lower voltage, while charge is "peaked" or "pierced" in open furnaces.
EFFECT: upgraded engineering-and-economical performance of furnace and safe operation.
