FIELD: information technologies.

SUBSTANCE: method to detect and identify metal items, for instance, pipes, also with welded joints, including performance of introscope scanning, for instance: with ultrasound, X-rays, electromagnetic field, registration of abnormal structural exhibits in metal structure, stipulated by process reasons during smelting, rolling and welding, also in areas of welded joints, besides, dimensional space and coordinate parameters are detected and measured for geometric shape of abnormal exhibits in the selected zone of scanning and measurements, for instance, in a zone of welded seam or its section in the form of shape irregularities and topographical arrangement of abnormal exhibits in metal structure, produced image of detected abnormalities in the internal structure is saved and input into the data base as a certain coded digital file of information, their spatial location and mutual alignment in volume or in surface layer of the item, being an individual unique card of a serial item, the produced coded digital file of information during further scanning sessions is used as an initial identification card.

EFFECT: making it possible to identify a serial metal item by its unique individual characteristics of internal structure of a serial item metal.
