FIELD: physics.
SUBSTANCE: data on the first image of an object are recorded the instant the object is illuminated by light emitted by a light source and ambient light. Data on the second image of the same object are recorded the instant the object is illuminated with ambient light but not light from the light source. Differential image data are compiled by subtracting data on the second image from data on the first image. The method also includes an additional step on which the camera settings are determined based on the compiled differential image data. The determined camera settings must be used when capturing a third image of the object using a light flash emitted by the light source in order to illuminate the object.
